Firm History

Humble Beginnings

Munford "Monk" Fuller joined Charlie Smith in 1967 to form Smith & Fuller Architects, A.I.A..  As a small, local firm, their focus was on providing affordable, quality architecture.  Their philosophy was that every client deserves a high standard of design regardless of the project budget.  With this in mind, they provided design and construction administration services on a variety of project types, eventually specializing in K-12 educational facilities to meet the needs of the residents of the Pee Dee region of South Carolina.

Mr. Ward recently retired as President of FW Architects, Inc., after serving the firm for over 42 years.  As an independent consultant Mr. Ward continues to provide his input and support to the firm in a variety of ways.  His vast experience in project administration and his design expertise are invaluable assets to our firm.

Dennis Ward began his internship with Smith & Fuller Architects in 1976.  After earning his Master of Architecture degree from Clemson University in 1981, Dennis worked for two years as a graduate intern for Intergroup Architects in Denver, Colorado. He returned to Florence and upon completing his internship, earned his license and rose to staff architect within the firm.

Charlie Smith retired in 1982 and the firm became known as Munford G. Fuller & Associates, P.A. until 1991 when Dennis became partner and the firm was renamed once again: Fuller Ward & Associates, P.A.  It was during this transition that Hal Fuller joined FW&A, after having earned his Master of Architecture from Clemson University, where he was presented the Harlan E. McClure Design Excellence Award, and interning with TVS&A (TVS Design) in Atlanta, Georgia.

Monk Fuller's retirement in 1995 saw Dennis rise to President and Hal named Vice-President, and the firm then became FW Architects, Inc., as it known today. This period in the firm's history saw considerable growth both in staff size and the number of projects awarded to it.  In the years since, the staff size has decreased due to various forms of attrition such as retirement and spouse relocation.  The amount and quality of work produced by the firm, however, has not.

Mark Palmer joined FW Architects, Inc. in 2013 as a project architect after many years with other local firms.  He earned his Master of Architecture from Clemson University in 2001 and in 2009 received his license.

After more than 42 years with FW Architects, Inc., Dennis Ward announced his retirement in 2024.  Hal Fuller has since assumed the role of President with Mark Palmer elevated to Vice-President.  In addition, longtime staff member David Sawyer was named partner as well.

During this extended period of change our firm has stayed focused on our goals and remain adaptable to new opportunities, in effect maintaining the stability required to be successful.

Our continuing mission

Humble beginnings fuel success... remembering our origins inspires progress

I am very concerned about this situation, as is Carolina Wholesale Floors, where I purchased the flooring.  I disagree with the inspection report and believe that HomeLegend should take action to address the issue.  In my profession, if the manufacturer does not support their product, I will not recommend it, as there are other options available that do.  Ultimately, it boils down to the quality of the product and the reliability of the manufacturer's service, before, during and after the project is complete.
